Media Release: Lifetime Achievement
Holyomes Honoured for Forty Years of Fostering!

December 1, 2020  (Brantford, ON) – (Brant FACS).

Susan and Gerry Holyome have been fostering for Brant Family and Children’s Services since 1980. When they started on this 40 year journey, they expressed a desire to foster babies and very quickly received a call about caring for a medically fragile child.  After accepting this placement, Susan and Gerry transferred over to the Alternate Care program that supported children with complex medical needs.

Although initially saying they could only take this particular child for a few weeks, those few weeks turned into 20 plus years and Susan would on occasion jokingly ask if her two weeks were up yet.  Susan and Gerry have always approached fostering with humor, which has sustained and grounded them through the years.  The family has spent countless hours at Sick Kids or McMaster ensuring that medical needs of our most fragile youth are met, driving children to family access visits, preparing amazing life books and ensuring the children feel they are cherished members of their family.  In doing this, countless hours of medical training have been completed to meet provincial standards and advocate in the best interest of the children.

The love Susan Gerry provide is in abundance and always unconditional. “I couldn’t love the children we take into our home any less than I love my own” says Susan.  This sentiment is shared by Susan and Gerry’s extended families who have spent countless holidays, birthday and special occasions celebrating side by side.  Gerry recently said “Once a child has been in our home, it’s a lifelong commitment and relationship.  It doesn’t end when they leave.  We love and support them forever.”  They have helped to launch many children on to adoptive homes, staying involved to support those families where they are able and welcome to do so.

Susan and Gerry are both strong advocates for foster parents as well as children in care, with Susan volunteering on the Boards of Directors of Brant FACS, the Brant Foster Parent Association, and Foster Parent Society of Ontario over a period of more than 20 years.

Brant Family and Children’s Services wishes to express our heartfelt appreciation to the Holyome’s and their extended families for their continued love and support.  Words cannot express the agency’s and the children’s gratitude for the love and support provided over the last 40 years.  Many changes have occurred in this time, but their love and support has remained constant!
